I’m not used to this.
We had a client reschedule an appointment and we weren’t sure what to do with the open studio time. Kristen decided to create a design and offer it to anyone who would be willing to fill the slot in short order.
Our nascent social media, and general online, presence isn’t particularly strong, but it seemed worth the effort to play with a marketing strategy.
Kristen’s black and grey flowers are created with affectionate attention to the details and spirit of each petal, stamen, and stigma. I suggested she draw a peony as we had recently seen the many blooms at Winterthur and a few were opening in our own garden.
Although entirely supportive of Kristen through the drawing and posting phases, I was convinced it was too narrow a time frame for success. I saw this as a worthwhile opportunity to learn and get practice with the tools at hand.
The night before our empty slot, there was some notice, but no one was interested in coming in for the work.
Early the next morning, a day we thought we would now have free to ourselves, multiple people messaged wanting Kristen’s design. I woke her up to sort through the requests and determine how to handle all of this in a couple hours. It was simple enough and our client walked away with a fantastic flower.
In some ways, I’m more comfortable with failure, at least in first efforts. I don’t expect to get it right the first time. I’m under no illusion that our last-minute marketing will always work this well, but this little win was huge for our growing business.
